Remarks.

Claim No. 1.-The amount is the equivalent at

2. 2d. for the 6,000 fixed by the Secretary of State. Clain No. 2.--I hare based the amount for Captain Joslin's claim on a rough estimate of one year's salary, the cost of a trip home, and a certain amount for probable delay in obtaining command of a ship on his return to China. Clair No. 3.-Here I have allowed 500 dollars for personal effects, his claim having overvalued them, and 2,500 dollars for injuries. The man is quite able to carry on his duties, and though he went through much suffering from his burns, he was not incapacitate 1.

Cinim No. 4.Khan Mahomed's case is probably the worst of all. His jaw is permanently injured, and after four months' hospital he was discharged, and had later to return there. He is still under medical treatment, I have allowed him 2,000 dollars compensation claimed in full, and his losses reduced by one-third.

Claim No. 5.Ali Akhbar, whose jaw was splintered by a bullet, was about three weeks in hospital und was discharged cured. His losses appear exag- gerated, and I have reduced them to 150 dollars, with 500 dollars compensation for injuries. Claim No. 6.-Sherif Hullah was only four days in hospital with slight bullet wounds. 400 dollars seems a fair amount to cover his losses, with a small compensation for injuries.

Claim No. 14.-The Company's claim for actual loss, damage, and expenses, seem to me quite reasonable.

Claim No. 15.-Only a few of the larger claims have been filed with the Company. Un general principles, I have reduced them by one-third. The other claims of the Chinese erew and staff have been dealt with in much the same manner, but regard has been had to the items given in each

case.
